We support and promote innovative and evidence-based solutions to address some of our country’s most pressing physical and mental health care challenges.

We believe all Canadians, especially young Canadians, should have access to the tools, information and supports they need to live their best lives, both mentally and physically.

Child and Youth Mental Health

Mental health is the fastest growing category of disability costs, including the long term economic costs of health care, disability claims and lost productivity. By 2020 it is expected that depression will rank second only to heart disease as the leading cause of disability in Canada. Most mental disorders – about 70% – can be diagnosed before age 25, with the onset of most mental health issues occurring in young childhood and adolescence.

Medavie supports initiatives and develops partnerships that improve access to a range of mental health supports for children, youth and young adults in ensuring individuals receive the support they need to live productive, fulfilling lives in the community.

Post-Traumatic Stress

It is estimated that at any given time, one in 10 Canadians is experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with the prevalence rate of lifetime PTSD at 9.2%. PTS is often associated with veterans, first responders and other emergency personnel, but families of victims can also develop PTS, as well as those who have experienced a violent crime, sexual violence, or witnessed a natural disaster. PTS is a mental illness that can seriously disrupt a person’s life, for children, youth and adults.

Medavie supports initiatives and develops partnerships that help individuals and their families who may be impacted by post-traumatic stress.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada and studies show a strong link to childhood obesity. Beyond the difficulty of managing the disease itself, type 2 diabetes can also result in devastating complications such as blindness, kidney failure and heart disease. Prevention, early intervention and self-management are critical to controlling both the disease and the related health impacts.

Medavie supports initiatives and develop partnerships that promote healthy eating, active living, and improve access to healthy food choices and physical literacy in reducing the risk factors and impact of type 2 diabetes.
